Brian Cantwell Smith is a philosopher and cognitive scientist working in
the fields of philosophy with a focus on ontology, cognitive, computer, and
information science. His research focuses on the foundations and philosophy
of computing, both in the practice and theory of computer science, and in
the use of computational metaphors in other fields, such as philosophy,
cognitive science, physics, and art. He is Professor of Information,
Computer Science, and Philosophy as well as the Reid Hoffman Professor of
Artificial Intelligence and the Human at the University of Toronto. His
books include: On the Origin of Objects (MIT Press, 1996) and The Promise
of Artificial Intelligence: Reckoning and Judgment (MIT Press, 2019).
